Are there plans for an API for ESASky?

this would allow programmatic access to the tool & the data, for example to use ESASky inside a jupyter notebook.

That exists already: we have an astroquery module in astropy that allows you to do exactly that already. See the documentation here:

more recently, we developed pyESASky, which allows you not simply to query, but also to use most ESASky functionalities and even to upload your own datasets. More information here:
