Allow selection of a region in the sky with a box/circle

Belén López Martí 7 years ago updated by Deborah Baines 3 years ago 4

Another suggestion from the teachers at the ESTEC workshop in November 2017: The possibility to mark a box or circle in the sky to select a region of interest to be displayed.

Completed

Dear Belen,

The last version of ESASky, v4.1, now has the option to search for data within a cone, box or polygon. See here for details: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc/esasky-interface#search.

And, also related to your suggestion, it is also possible to select already loaded data that fall within a circle, box or polygon. See here for more details: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc/esasky-interface#seltool

and also see this video:

Many thanks for your suggestions!

Kind regards,

Debbie

Thanks Belén, those use cases make sense indeed. I have added them to the backlog and will be prioritized according to the likes to this request and other criteria.

I don't know for sure in which context this was proposed, but I can imagine several applications:

  1. Select a specific region and zoom into it. This can help the analysis of particular features/objects.
  2. Define a specific region so that only the data covering that region are displayed (as a quick, visual way of filtering data).
  3. Define a specific region so that only the data covering that region are selected among all the data visualized in the sky  (but the rest of data are still displayed) -as a quick way of selecting data to download.

Under review

Thanks Belén, but this would benefit from a bit more specific user story: what does the user wants to do with a selected region in the sky? visualize it? limit the queries to it? or download all data from it?
