first of all I have to thank you since your request has been taken as a very interesting challenge by the team. Therefore, 

sorry if I did not reply on this request yet, but we have been working on it until now. 

Since we had already implemented a Javascript ESASky API for our Jupyter notebook/lab widget (https://github.com/esdc-esac-esa-int/pyesasky) we though that your request was something feasible in a short time. We just though that we had to expose our already implemented API methods through an IFRAME. The problem we had to face with was the CORS problem.


Well, at the end we got it and you can check the result by yourself by opening the following link:

Feel free to play with it and please tell us if it is what you were expecting. 

Just in case, attached you can find the original HTML file should you want to open it locally.

Please notice that this is only a concept and it might have some bug or problems with some browsers (I have tested it with Firefox and Chrome). In the near future, we will make the documentation available online describing how to embed ESASky in a web page with all the details about the features exposed.


I hope you will find this sample useful.

Dear Jareel,

I'm sorry but at the moment it is not possible to change the point of view from outside to inside the sky, since the visualization tool we are using does not allow it. Therefor I can anticipate you that we are already working on this specific feature, but it would not be available in the short term.

thank you for reporting this issue. We have just released ESASky v3.1.2 that should have fixed this issue. Please give a try and let us know whether you still experience problems with the screenshot feature in Chrome.

thank you for asking. As you experienced already, right now it is not possible to search for Earth in ESASky and, sorry to tell you that, we do not have plans in the short term to make it possible.

But if you are more interested in the Earth observation, let me please suggest you a page containing a list of tools focused in this field:

Dear John,

thank you for the suggestion! Having the "tag feature" available in ESASky would be very useful for the users and the ESASky Team at whole agreed on putting it into the short term development. Unfortunately we cannot include it in the ESASky v3.1, which is almost ready for the release (maybe before a couple of weeks). But I can tell you that the "tag feature" has been included in the backlog of ESASky v3.2, which is planned to be released this year, just before Summer.

Then, since you mentioned python, let me give you a little anticipation about a new ESASky product related we are working on: pyESASky.

pyESASky is a Jupiter Notebook Widget in which you have access to all the features available already in ESASky web version, plus some extra features, such as the possibility to overlay your own data.

We will try to include the "tag feature" in it before ESASky v3.2 is released.

Dear Becky,

sorry for the delay. We have found a little issue in our databases. We have been able to optimize a bit the performances, but still a more work is needed in order to make queries faster. Now if you go in the area you have reported and overlay Gaia DR2 data and try to get the data again, after 20/25 seconds you will have it. I know it is not very fast, but I am confident that soon we could improve the performances and the responsiveness of our systems more.

Regarding the text appearing when ESASky is searching for Gaia data, you are right. That's why your suggestion is already one of the point we are going to discuss in the next ESASky internal meeting.

Dear Becky,


we have just finished the data synchronization on our backend. I have tested ESASky with the URL you have provided and it works as expected. I am really sorry for the inconvenience. We are working on to avoid more impact to the ESASky's users when performing maintenance on the internal infrastructure for the future.

Answering to your second question, we have already a task related to the "user notification" in our development backlog having high priority. I cannot tell you precisely by when it will be developed and made available, but I can assure that it will be processed very soon.

Yes John! Looking at your snapshot and after reading your comment I can definitely confirm that the problem is related to the Content Delivery Network. I will pass all the details to the Network Team for further investigation.

I hope that this issue will be fixed soon.

thank you for your reporting! I have checked in my computer and I am not able to reproduce your issue, sorry. As a first check could you please try to hard refresh your browser and check if the hole is still there? The DSS2 Color HiPS map in ESASky is the same that you can find in AladinLite. 

Moreover during these last days we are experiencing some funny issues with our Content Delivery Network which is in charge of the distribution of the HiPS maps across the World. You might experience delays and in some cases tiles loading failure which might cause some holes in the HiPS maps.
It would very useful if you could take a snapshot of your browser when this issue happens and attach it to this topic.
